Before you start — read this
- Work through platforms in the order listed. Data aggregators supply people-finder sites, so remove yourself from aggregators first where possible.
- Keep a record of every request you submit — date, platform, confirmation number if provided.
- Some platforms will re-list you within 3-12 months. A quarterly check is recommended.
- Do not provide more information than is requested. You do not need to submit your full ID for most opt-outs — name and email is sufficient for most platforms.
- If a platform requests payment to remove your listing, do not pay. That is a deceptive practice. Report it to the OAIC.
Australian People Finders
WhitePages Australia
5 min- 1.Go to whitepages.com.au and search your name
- 2.Find your listing and click the URL to open it
- 3.Scroll to the bottom and click 'Remove my listing'
- 4.Enter your email address to verify
- 5.Click the confirmation link in your email
Suppression is permanent. Takes up to 72 hours to reflect.
Spokeo
5 min- 1.Go to spokeo.com and search your name
- 2.Find your listing — note the exact URL
- 3.Go to spokeo.com/optout
- 4.Paste your listing URL and enter your email
- 5.Confirm via the email sent to you
You may have multiple listings if you have lived at different addresses. Check each one.

- 2.Open your listing
- 3.Click 'Remove this record' at the bottom of the page
- 4.Complete the CAPTCHA
- 5.Confirm via email

FastPeopleSearch

- 2.Open your listing and copy the URL
- 3.Go to fastpeoplesearch.com/removal
- 4.Paste the URL, enter email, submit
- 5.Click confirmation link in your email
Takes 24-48 hours to process.
Data Aggregators
Acxiom
5 min- 1.Go to isapps.acxiom.com/optout/optout.aspx
- 2.Click 'Opt Out of InfoBase' under the Data category
- 3.Fill in your name and address details
- 4.Submit the form
- 5.No email confirmation — allow 30 days
Acxiom supplies data to hundreds of downstream companies. This is one of the most important opt-outs.
LexisNexis
10 min- 1.Go to optout.lexisnexis.com
- 2.Select 'Personal Information Opt Out'
- 3.Complete the identity verification form
- 4.Submit with a copy of government-issued ID
- 5.Expect 30 day processing time
ID verification is required. Use a black-and-white scan or photo of your driver's licence — obscure your licence number, keeping only your name and photo visible.
Equifax
5 min- 1.Go to equifax.com.au
- 2.Navigate to Privacy → Marketing Opt-Out
- 3.Complete the online form with your details
- 4.Submit — no email confirmation required
This removes you from Equifax marketing lists, not your credit file. Credit file access is separate.
Experian
5 min- 1.Go to experian.com.au
- 2.Navigate to Privacy Policy → Marketing Opt-Out
- 3.Complete the form
- 4.Submit
Same as Equifax — this is for marketing lists only.
Social & Search Platforms
Google — Remove Outdated Content
5 min- 1.Go to search.google.com/search-console/remove-outdated-content
- 2.Paste the URL of the page showing your information
- 3.Select 'Outdated page' if the broker site has already removed you
- 4.Submit the request
- 5.Google typically processes within 24-48 hours
Use this after the broker has confirmed your removal. It removes the cached result from Google search.
Facebook — Limit Data Sharing
10 min- 1.Go to Settings → Ads → Ad Settings
- 2.Set 'Data about your activity from partners' to Off
- 3.Set 'Ads based on data from partners' to Off
- 4.Go to Settings → Your Facebook Information → Off-Facebook Activity
- 5.Click 'Clear History' and 'Manage Future Activity' → set to Off
This limits but does not eliminate Facebook's data sharing. Review annually.
LinkedIn — Limit Data Use
8 min- 1.Go to Settings → Data Privacy
- 2.Turn off 'Data sharing with third-party applications'
- 3.Turn off 'Salary data on LinkedIn'
- 4.Under 'Advertising data' turn off all three options
- 5.Save each change
Your public profile remains visible. These settings control backend data sharing.
Marketing Databases
DMAchoice (Direct Marketing Opt-Out)
10 min- 1.Go to optout.aboutads.info
- 2.Create a free account
- 3.Select the types of mail you want to opt out of: Credit offers, Catalogues, Magazine offers, Other mail
- 4.Submit — this covers hundreds of companies in one request
This is a US-based service but covers many companies that operate in Australia. Strongly recommended.
Australian Do Not Call Register
3 min- 1.Go to donotcall.gov.au
- 2.Click 'Register your number'
- 3.Enter your Australian mobile or landline
- 4.Verify via the confirmation email or SMS
Legally binding in Australia. Telemarketers are required to check this register before calling.
Know Your Rights
Your Rights Under Australian Privacy Law
Right to Access
Under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), you can request a copy of any personal information an organisation holds about you. They must respond within 30 days.
Right to Correction
If information held about you is incorrect, you can request it be corrected. The organisation must respond within 30 days.
Right to Opt Out of Direct Marketing
Any organisation using your information for direct marketing must provide a free and easy way to opt out. They must comply within a reasonable timeframe.
Right to Complain
If an organisation breaches the Australian Privacy Principles, you can lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.

If an organisation refuses to comply with a removal request or breaches the Australian Privacy Principles, you can lodge a formal complaint at no cost with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
